Tufahija – a treat for the palate!

Tufahija is a favourite dessert in Bosnian cuisine. It gratifies the palate and melts your heart, so it’s a must-try dessert for all you foodies out there! Balkon3 presents an excellent recipe that will help you prepare it at home and we guarantee you are in for a delicious treat!

Ingredients for 5 servings:

5 Golden Delicious apples

300 gr sugar

500 ml water

250 gr sweet cream

100 gr walnuts

50 gr almonds

1 packet vanilla sugar

some lemon juice

Preparation:

Put 500ml of water, 300gr of sugar and vanilla sugar in a large pot. Bring it to a boil and let it simmer until the mixture thickens.

Peel and core the apples. Put them in the pot with the syrup and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until they are tender but still firm. Take them out of the pot and let them cool. Reserve the syrup.

In the meantime, prepare the filling. Mix the sweet cream, walnuts and almonds until well blended. Add a little lemon juice.

Fill the cold apples with the mixture. Garnish with the rest of the filling or some beaten sweet cram, and you may put a piece of lemon or candied cherries on top. Serve each apple in a dessert cup. Pour some syrup over them, let them soak for a while and delicious tufahija is ready to be served.

Those who think it is a calorie bomb will forget all about it once they try this savory dessert. Besides, you can always use less sugar if you want to cut down on calories. Enjoy! 🙂
