Commemorating a year from his death, Greece honors the great movie director by a series of special screenings of his complete works in cinema theatres of 3 major cities.
The movie panorama will be hosted in various Athens cinema theatres and cultural venues, in Ster Cinemas of Thessaloniki (Pylea district) and at Hatziyiannio Cultural Centre Auditorium (downtown Larissa). All movies will have English subtitles, except from “The Hunters” that will be subtitled in French.
Teo Angelopoulos (b. Athens, 1935) met with “Eternity” on January 24th 2012, hit by a motorcycle while walking near Pireus. He had been working in the vicinity for his 3rd movie to complete a trilogy that began with “The Weeping Meadow” in 2003. The tribute screenings open exactly on this date, while a memorial service will be held at the principal Athens Cemetery where his state-funded funeral took place last year.
Certainly the most internationally acknowledged Greek director, countless times awarded for his work throughout his long and tireless career, Angelopoulos is considered one of the leaders in contemporary European cinematography.
A highlight of his career, Golden Palm in Cannes (Eternity and a day, 1998)
In his own special style he used the “misty” atmospheric landscape as a symbol of traumatic events of a political nature and their impact on divided societies. His message expressed a stance against injustice as it was experienced in many painful ways during the Greek Civil War (1944 – 1949) and its long aftermath, the Cold War and the subsequent Iron Curtain that fell upon the entire northern borders of Greece.
The suspended step of the Stork
The region of Western Macedonia in Greece and particularly the town of Florina has been his favorite venue for shooting internationally awarded films, such as “The Bee-Keeper” (1986), “Landscape in the Mist” (1988), “The suspended step of the stork” (1991) and “Ulysses’ Glance” (1995).

His work has been greatly enhanced by his long-term collaboration with the Italian novelist, script-writer and poet Tonino Guerra, the exceptional director of photography Yorgos Arvanitis and the brilliant composer Eleni Karaindrou.
