The Fortress

The Fortress stands at the highest point in the urban part of the city. It is one of the most popular places to visit in Skopje and is definitely a mandatory destination for every tourist. The impressive Fortress rises on the left bank of the Vardar River and it has a spectacular view of the center of Skopje. You can take photographs of the new monuments and buildings that have been constructed in the past few years. It is the best location for taking picture perfect postcard shots.

Despite its proximity to the city centre the Fortress is not a very crowded place, so you can choose it as a getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. During the summer it is the ideal location for open-air concerts. The Fortress was built in the VI century during the Byzantine Empire and is one of the richest archaeological sites in the country.
