Poppy Seed Baklava



½ kg phyllo dough

3 eggs

500 gr sugar

150-200 gr poppy seeds

1 packet baking powder

1 packet vanilla sugar

1 cup (250 мл) vegetable oil

1 cup (250 мл) sour milk

Ingredients for the syrup:

700 gr sugar (or less if you prefer)

700 ml water


Grease a rectangular baking pan with oil. Mix the eggs with the sugar and add all other ingredients one by one. After you get a smooth mixture you can start laying down the baklava. Cut each phyllo sheet in half, put it in the pan and sprinkle it with the mixture. Then put another sheet, sprinkle some of the mixture on it and continue until you’ve used all the phyllo dough. Top it with a phyllo sheet. Using a sharp knife cut it into diamonds or squares.  Preheat the oven at 180˚C, let it bake for 15 minutes, then lower the heat at 150˚C and bake for another 30 minutes until golden brown. Meanwhile, prepare the syrup with 700 gr of sugar (or less if you prefer, depending on your taste) and 700 ml of water. It shouldn’t be very thick. Take the baklava out of the oven, sprinkle it with vanilla sugar and pour the syrup evenly over it. Let it cool until the syrup is well absorbed and the baklava gets soft.
