In Skopje all roads lead to the main city square, Macedonia Square. The citizens of Skopje celebrate the New Year’s Eve here, organize humanitarian aid events, cultural events or political rallies. In the past few years this area is in the centre of Skopje 2014 project. What used to be Marshal Tito Square now seems like an open-air museum with a large number of monuments and sculptures, along with the construction of new buildings and restoration of the old ones in Baroque style.
The majority of Skopje citizens do not like or approve of the new look of the city, some even attack the project with harsh criticism, but the fact remains that the number of tourists with cameras on the square is much higher than before. In the centre of the square there is a fountain and a 22-meter-high monument called “Warrior on a horse”. The city square was built between 1920 and 1940 and Ristic Palace is one of the oldest and most representative objects that are located around it. Also the City Shopping Centre, the Stone Bridge as well as several other modern business buildings constructed in the last ten years, they all surround the square.
